Massage Therapy

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the most popular type of massage in the United States. It involves the use of hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles to improve mental and physical health, using long flowing strokes. Active or passive movement of the joints may also be part of the massage.

The benefits of Swedish massage include increased blood circulation, mental and physical relaxation, decreased stress and muscle tension, and improved range of motion.  Depending upon preference, this massage can range from a light to deep technique.

Deep Connective Tissue Massage

Deep connective tissue massage as the name suggests, aims to affect at the deeper tissue structure of the fascia and muscles. This technique directly affects the connective tissues – tissues that surround protect and support all other structures in the body.

Swedish massage and deep connective tissue massage have many movements in common but they differ in pressures used, the latter one uses more intense pressure and more structural work, and it can be a bit uncomfortable as compared to the Swedish massage. This technique is effective in releasing restrictions in the muscles, non-contractile supportive connective tissue, and contractile supportive tissue, and can be directed to specific problem to release adhesions in the surrounding connective tissue.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy is a bodywork technique that involves the application of pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body.  Trigger point therapy is sometimes regarded as one of a group of treatment approaches called neuromuscular therapy or NMT.

Trigger points are thought to result from a variety of causes, including birth trauma, hypoglycemia, vitamin B6 deficiency, food allergies, traumatic injuries, poor posture, skeletal asymmetry, overexertion, or such diseases of the digestive tract as ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome. During times of physical or emotional stress, the points cause muscles to spasm.

The object is to eliminate pain and to reeducate the muscles into pain-free habits. The swelling and stiffness of neuromuscular pain is reduced, range of motion is increased, and flexibility and coordination are improved.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries.

The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively.

The massage will help prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries. Sports massage can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement, whether a person is an athlete or a once a week jogger.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage is a massage that uses smooth, flat, and heated rocks placed at key points on the body.  Generally the rocks used in a hot stone massage are basalt, which has high heat retention qualities. Hot stones are placed in water and heated to within a certain temperature range before placement on the body.

The hot stones are usually placed on specific points on the back, but can be placed other places such as between the toes, or in the palms of the hands.  The heat of the rocks cause muscles to relax, and tension to be released.
